Staff Backend Engineer

The employer is a networking company that designs connectivity products for enterprises and carriers.

Our Austin office is growing, and we need a Staff Backend Engineer who can set technical direction from day one. You will work closely with a collaborative software engineering group and report to the software engineering manager. This is a full-time, permanent position. This role is hybrid, with three days a week in our Austin office.

What you’ll do

• Improve test coverage and release safety for critical services
• Design and operate APIs and data pipelines that power customer-facing products
• Model data and tune queries for PostgreSQL and other data stores
• Build asynchronous processing with message queues and streaming systems
• Mentor junior engineers and review their work
• Set technical standards and guide decisions across multiple projects

What you’ll bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
• 8+ years of relevant professional experience
• Experience building back-end services in Go, Java, Python or a similar language
• Clear written communication for design reviews
• Experience operating services in a cloud environment
• A track record of leading projects from scope through delivery

Nice to have

• Experience with infrastructure as code
• Experience with Kafka or other streaming platforms

Compensation and benefits

The pay range for this position in Austin, TX is $179,000 – $227,000 per year. Final pay depends on experience, skills and qualifications.
