Staff Backend Engineer

The employer is an applied machine learning company serving insurance and financial services clients.

As a Staff Backend Engineer with the employer, you will set technical direction and help shape how the software engineering team works. This position is based in Sunnyvale, CA. This is a 6-month contract with the possibility of extension. This role is hybrid, with three days a week in our Sunnyvale office.

What you’ll do

• Write design documents and weigh trade-offs with the wider engineering group
• Improve test coverage and release safety for critical services
• Own services end to end, including deployment, monitoring and on-call
• Design and operate APIs and data pipelines that power customer-facing products
• Model data and tune queries for PostgreSQL and other data stores
• Build asynchronous processing with message queues and streaming systems
• Mentor junior engineers and review their work
• Set technical standards and guide decisions across multiple projects

What you’ll bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
• 8+ years of relevant professional experience
• Experience building back-end services in Go, Java, Python or a similar language
• Experience operating services in a cloud environment
• Strong understanding of relational data modeling
• A track record of leading projects from scope through delivery

Nice to have

• Background in high-throughput or low-latency systems
• Experience with infrastructure as code

Compensation and benefits

The pay range for this position in Sunnyvale, CA is $161 – $196 per hour. Final pay depends on experience, skills and qualifications.
