Principal Civil Engineer

The employer is an engineering firm specializing in rail, transit and multimodal transportation.

Our Birmingham office is growing, and we need a Principal Civil Engineer who can set technical direction from day one. You will work closely with a collaborative civil engineering group and report to the civil engineering manager. This is a full-time, permanent position. This role is on site at our Birmingham location.

What you’ll do

• Prepare stormwater reports and calculations
• Coordinate with municipal reviewers and secure permits
• Support construction administration, including submittal review and site visits
• Prepare cost estimates and quantity takeoffs
• Prepare site, grading, utility and drainage designs for land development projects
• Produce construction drawings and specifications in Civil 3D
• Mentor junior engineers and review their work
• Set technical standards and guide decisions across multiple projects

What you’ll bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
• 8+ years of relevant professional experience
• Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D
• Working knowledge of local and state design standards
• Strong technical writing skills
• A track record of leading projects from scope through delivery

Nice to have

• Experience with HEC-RAS or SWMM
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT certification

Compensation and benefits

The pay range for this position in Birmingham, AL is $120,000 – $153,000 per year. Final pay depends on experience, skills and qualifications.
